Thanksgiving Celebration Ideas

When is it? USA - 4th Thursday in November / Canada - 2nd Monday in October

Today, Thanksgiving often serves as one of those few times during the year, when an entire family assembles, including extended members such as in-laws, grown grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, and special guests.

When you're hosting the big event, anxiety and stress can set in even weeks in advance, but only if you let it. The key to alleviating some of the strain of organizing a big get-together, is careful planning, preparation, and sharing the chores.

If it's an extended family type of Thanksgiving dinner, you might either opt for a buffet, or if you are doing the complete turkey dinner, ask each family to bring an item from a list of side dishes like coleslaw, jellied salads, a vegetable and dip tray, pumpkin pies, etc. This cuts down on expense and preparation time for you.

But if you're just going to be cooking for your own family and perhaps the in-laws and grandparents, planning ahead takes no more time than running around at the last minute, and avoids the panic of having forgotten an essential item or ingredient.

Day before preparation can be a lifesaver, whether that is peeling potatoes and setting them aside in water, to making salads that keep, baking the pies, or preparing the stuffing for the turkey, to be kept in the fridge until ready to get the bird out and into the oven.

Enlist the help of the rest of the family. Teens can peel vegetables very well if shown how. Even better, they can take charge of the younger children to leave you alone in the kitchen to work the magic that will appear on the table!
