Ramadan Ideas
When is it?:
Entire 9th month of Muslim Calendar
Ramadan is a Muslim celebration, held
during the entire ninth month of their calendar. Its date will vary
around the world, since the calendar is a lunar one, and the moon's
phase and position will vary according to the country in which the
practicing Muslim lives.
According to their faith, Ramadan is the
month during which the Koran, or Holy Book of the Muslims, was shown
to the prophet Muhammad. The prophet told his people that during this
month, the gates of Heaven would be open, and those of Hell would be
closed. And so the entire month, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk,
purifying the soul of sin.
Things that must be foresworn during those hours include food, drink,
smoking and intimate relations with your spouse. Individuals are also
expected to cleanse themselves of undesirable traits like greed, lust,
envy, etc. There are exceptions to the fasting requirement, such as
children who have not yet reached puberty and need to eat, pregnant
women, the elderly, those with medical conditions, and other special
circumstances. Instead, these people are urged to feed someone who
does not have enough to eat.
Those who accidentally break the fast, may make up for it by fasting
an extra day. Anyone who breaks the fast with intent, is assessed a
penalty in addition to making up for the day broken.
At the end of the month there is feasting, celebration and a general
rejoicing.
