Kwanzaa
Gift Giving
Kwanzaa is a celebration of traditional African values of family,
community, and culture. It is celebrated from December 26 through
January 1. The point of Kwanzaa is not one of gift giving or
religious celebration, but one of tribute to the heritage and
togetherness of African people.
Gifts (zawadi) are traditionally given to children and they are not
overly expensive. Gifts are usually given on the last day of Kwanzaa
(January 1st) however; some families enjoy an exchange of gifts
throughout the celebration and will relate their daily presents to
one of the seven Kwanzaa principles.
Traditional presents are books that emphasize the value of learning
or symbols of heritage such as art, baskets, bookends, pictures,
etc.

If you are searching to purchase gifts for Kwanzaa you can purchase
educational gifts or those that emphasize African and
African-American culture. Crafts, dolls, educational games/toys, and
tickets to cultural events are good gifts.
In choosing the appropriate Kwanzaa gift, consider the recipients'
behavior and achievements during the past year. Many gifts are given
to recognize achievements and to honor the progress that the
recipient has made throughout the past year. You can also choose
gifts that teach the receiver about Kwanzaa or serves as a
representation of the holiday.
Kwanzaa gift giving symbolizes an exchange of affection between
family and friends. Many people give hand-made gifts or present
heirlooms and heritage symbols instead of buying gifts. It is
customary to wrap the gifts in African prints or papers, or in the
traditional colors of Kwanzaa - red, green and black.
