Grandparent's Day Ideas

Date: September 10

Besides parents, there are few people so valued and valuable to our children as their grandparents. These are the people who hold the keys to the family treasury of memories, as well as the history and details of how life was when they were young.

For many older couples, the celebration of Mother's and Father's Day were just in their infancy, when these people had their children. But they are now enjoying something of the same celebration, with the marking of Grandparent's Day, the first Sunday after Labor Day in September.

The idea was initially proposed in the early 70s by Marion McQuade, an "elder" activist and herself the grandmother of 40. Her suggestion was met with widespread support, and in 1973, West Virginia became the first state to honor the older generation. That same year, the United States Senate made it a national holiday, however that does not mean that it's a paid day off from work for most people, if any. The federal government does not determine who must be given which holidays off, with the exception of 11 specific days it marks for its own employees.

So Grandparent's Day is mainly a local and familial event, a time when families gather to honor and share the day and their loved ones with each other.
