Fun & Creative Ways to Teach Kids about
America
If you’re like many American families, July 4th is a day for fun and
celebration full of cookouts, picnics and ending with fireworks. But,
did you ever stop to think that your children may be getting the wrong
impression of what Independence Day is really all about?
The parties, picnics and fireworks are
present to celebrate the United States’ freedom from England, but
unless you explain this to your children they will never truly
appreciate the reason we celebrate the holiday. Here are a few fun and
creative ways to teach your kids about the United States history.
Show Them the Money
Kids love money, so pull out some loose
change and paper bills and discuss the symbols and people that are on
them.
Take a Little Trip
Throughout the United States there are
lots of historical monuments, landmarks, museums and more. These
places are a great for visiting on a family vacation or even a day
trip. Some offer guided tours to explain their significance to the
past of the U.S. You can also find smaller, less known but equally
important places near home that offer the opportunity for you to talk
with your child about their homeland in a more casual setting.
Sing, Sing, Sing
From the National Anthem to Lee
Greenwood’s “Proud to be an American”, there are hundreds of songs
that tell of the United States history. Teach your children the words
to various patriotic songs and sing them together. One popular song
among young children is “Fifty Nifty United States.” This not only is
fun to sing, but is a great way to teach your children the names of
each state.
I Pledge Allegiance
Teach your child the pledge of
allegiance. Explain to them what the words stand for and make it a
routine to say the pledge each morning.
Your child will be proud to be an
American if they know what their country stands for and foundation it
was built upon. Use the fun and creative ways mentioned above to help
them learn why it’s called the Good Ole USA.
