Father's Day History
While Mother's Day has a long and
illustrious history dating back to the ancient Greeks who honored
Rhea, the mother of all the gods, Father's Day is a mere newcomer,
barely a hundred years old.
It was started by in 1909 by a woman
named Mrs. John P. Dodd who made a formal request in Washington, the
state where she lived, to honor the sacrifices of her father, William
Smart.
Mrs. Dodd was one of six children that were raised single-handedly by
their father, when their mother died during the birth of her youngest
sibling. Mr. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran returning to an
economically straightened home, was hard-pressed to provide for so
many youngsters, but it was a job well-done in the end.
The first official Father's Day was celebrated June 19, 1910 in
Spokane, Washington. But it would take another 14 years before
President Calvin Coolidge put his name and support behind the movement
to give the day national recognition. That would not come until
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the order in 1966. At which time
the sales of ties soared astronomically.
