Make a Papier Mache Globe

Kids love papier mache. Why not show your appreciation for our precious earth on Earth Day by making a papier mache globe? This can be a messy project, so be sure to have plenty of space and be prepared for clean up.

 

Supplies

  • Newspaper

  • Round balloon

  • Papier mache glue (recipe below)

  • Large paintbrush for glue (optional)

  • Pencil

  • Blue and green paint with brushes

Papier Mache Glue Recipe:

  • Mix 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of flour until smooth

  • Simmer mixture in 2 cups boiling water for 3 minutes

  • Allow to cool)

Making Your Globe:

  • Tear 1 inch strips of newspaper.

  • Blow up balloon to desired size.

  • Start applying newspaper strips to balloon by:

    • Dip a strip in the glue or apply glue with large paintbrush

    • Apply strip to balloon

    • Repeat the process until you have 3-4 layers on the balloon

    • Allow to dry overnight

  • Draw the continents on with pencil.

  • Paint the water blue and the land green.

What to Do with Your Globe:

Globes can be hung from the ceiling (hint: future projects could be to create a whole solar system). You can also have your children learn and label all the continents.
