Earth Day Ideas

Date: April 22

With the advent of so much technology, not the least of which is the Internet, we have truly become a global community, with rights and responsibilities to ourselves and our neighbors, whether they are in the next town, or halfway around the world. Teaching children about the concepts behind Earth Day can be done in a way that gives them a sense of how we as humans, need to care for Nature, in order to have a world for the future, and their children when they grow up and marry.

Earth Day was first proposed to the United Nations as an international holiday in 1977, and grew out of concerns for how what we all do as individuals, impacts our future as countries and society. A unified "Earth", would require cooperation, awareness and education, and that's where parents can be a great help to ensure there is an Earth for future generations.

Talking about pollution and the environment, doesn't necessarily need to be a negative experience, and that type of presentation should be avoided, particularly with younger children. Their minds sometimes focus on the most obvious point, and can end up dwelling on things that should not be worrying them at this time in their life.

Instead, present information in an appealing and interesting way that emphasizes what they can do, and what the Earth does for them in return. Take a walk in the country, and point out wildflowers that we are not allowed to pick, because they need to grow roots and spread seeds so that people in the future will be able to see them, too. Get them to help you plant flowers or a tree, while explaining how plants contribute to the air, and how making compost with degradable materials, saves garbage from landfills, and makes everything grow.

Not only will you be educating your child for the future, you'll also be spending some quality time together.

Earth Day--Hooray!

Earth Day is on the way, and Ryan, Luke, and Carly have a plan. If they manage to collect and recycle 5,000 aluminum cans, they can make enough money to buy some beautiful flowers for nearby Gilroy Park.
