Children's Day Ideas
Date: June 1
While not always an official holiday,
Children's Day is marked in many countries around the world, usually
as a celebration of the promise that children hold for themselves and
the future of our society.
The United Nations and UNESCO declared a
Universal Children' Day in 1954, which is still celebrated every
November 20. International Children's Day is a loosely agreed upon
day, usually June 1, on which quite a few countries dedicate time and
events to the celebration of childhood and the value of children.
There appears to be no records of how the date was chosen, but it is
suggested that a coincidental meshing of events that took place in
1925 are responsible. That was the year when the concept of ICD was
formed, at the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children, in
Geneva, Switzerland. The Chinese Consul General happened to be in San
Francisco at the time, and gathered together a host of orphans to
celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, which took place June 1.
Children's Day is largely celebrated in European and other Eastern
countries, including India, and at one time was thought to be of
Communist origin because it has a long history in Russia, and almost
no presence in the Western World. However, it has become more widely
acknowledged in America, and with children our most precious resource,
is enjoying a new revival.
