Zoo Party Theme

Who doesn't enjoy a trip to the zoo? Instead of taking all the guests for your child's party to the zoo, why not bring the zoo to you?

The Invitations: Buy paper animal masks or make your own. On the back, write the details of the party, along with instructions to come dressed as the animal represented by the mask.

The Cake: The shape of the birthday child's favorite zoo animal.

The Decorations: Big leafy plants, stuffed monkeys hanging from the ceiling, giant animal cutouts on the walls, stuffed parrots all over. Make an arched sign for the front door that says "Welcome to the (your surname) Zoo!"

The Games:

-Pin the Tail on the Elephant. You can use any favorite zoo animal for this game. Draw the animal on a large piece of poster board and mount it on the wall. Make up enough tails so each child can have 2-3 turns and use tape to avoid accidents. Blindfold each player, spin him three times and let him do his best to stick the tail on correctly. The child who has his tails the closest to the actual tail site wins.

-Charades: Before the party, make up a couple dozen index cards with an animal written on it. Use a few common animals, like cat or elephant, but make the others a bit more obscure, platypus, ostrich, cheetah, etc. Divide the kids into teams. Each team takes turns sending a player up to choose a card. The player then has to act the animal out. If the team guesses correctly within a minute, they get a point. If they don't guess, the card goes to the other team.

-Animal Bingo: Before the party, make up a bingo card for each child. There should be five rows of five, 25 squares in all. Each column should have a background color, like red, blue, green, etc. Use clipart animals to place in the squares (this is best done on a program like Microsoft Publisher). Make sure they are in a different order for each square. You will also need to make slips of paper with the names of the animals you used and separate slips with the colors. Now, when the children sit down to play, you can give them pennies to put on the animal you call or let them use bingo stampers. You select a color and an animal slip and read them out, "Blue cow!" for example. The first child to get a bingo in a single line wins the first round, after that you can play for a blackout bingo, with all the squares selected.

-Super Memory: Buy a collection of at least 20 tiny plastic animals and arrange them on a baking tray. Give each child a pen and paper. Now, bring out the tray and set it on the floor where all the guests can see it clearly. They have 1 minute to remember all the animals on the tray. Now, cover the tray and hide it. Let the children write as many of the animals down as possible in the next 10 minutes. The child or children with the most correct animals wins.

The Prizes: You can buy or make goody bags from animal-themed wrapping paper and fill them with animal gummies, peanut candies, etc.
