Themed Parties for Toddlers

Toddlers aren't as interested in themed parties as older children, but don't let that stop you from creating a fantastic party. If nothing else, you'll be happy and he'll see the photos later!

Toddle theme parties should be kept simple and low-key. Usually just 3-4 guests is best and the party should be kept pretty short, 1-2 hours, so the birthday child doesn't get overwhelmed by everything.

Choose a theme that your little one enjoys. If he likes trains, make him a train cake and put up train-themed decorations. Your little girl prefers Teletubbies to trains? There are plenty of themed decorations available in any party store!

If you just can't decide on a theme, let your toddler choose. Go to the party section of the department store and let him go crazy. You'll figure out if he likes Dumbo or Chicken Little better in a few minutes! When he clutches the Chicken Little plastic plates to his chest and shouts "NO!" when you try to put them back, he's made his choice.

Although themes can be fun, there's no need to go overboard. You don't have to buy the plates, cups, forks and napkins as well as the party hats. Just a couple of elements will be fine. For example, your little Barbie fan will be perfectly thrilled if she has Barbie plates and hats. She doesn't need all the rest! Save the money because when she's five or six, she'll be insisting that everything down to her underwear match the theme!

You might prefer to make your own décor, which is fine. Use craft foam, markers and other craft supplies to match the themed party. You could also make your own goody bags from wrapping paper by taking apart a brown paper bag and using it as a pattern.

The games for a toddler party should be few. You don't need much to keep a handful of little ones busy. Put on a video that matches the party theme if things get out of hand.

You can have a simple treasure hunt, where you just hide candies or individually wrapped cookies around the house and the kids get to look for them. Or sing some fun action songs together and have them dance around. Like I said, keep it simple.

As long as you keep the toddler theme party easy and don't stress out about decorating the entire house to the theme, you should have a great party experience!
