Survivor Birthday Party
Reality shows are a big hit these days
and you can turn your young fan's party into one. With a few fun
challenges, disgusting looking food, and great rewards, a simple
birthday party becomes a "Survivor" party!
The Invitations: To make old-looking
invitations, use regular writing paper. Dip into strong coffee to
give it an aged appearance and dry in the sun. Once the paper is
dry, carefully burn the corners and edges over a candle. Write the
invitation and specify play clothes. Roll up the invitation and tie
with a colored scarf, red or blue, which will determine which team
the child will be on.
The Cake: Buy one mini beach bucket for each child. Fill 2/3 with
crumbled chocolate cake and add chocolate pudding until it just
covers the cake. Chill the buckets until the pudding is set. Add
gummy worms and bugs, sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles and stick a
flag with the child's name (make flags with a toothpick and triangle
of aged paper).
The Decorations: This theme is best done out of doors. Drape plants
with fishnet. Indoors, add potted plants to hide the walls. Each
child should wear the colored scarf for their team. The team colors
can be scattered around the game sites. Make a big scoreboard with
the team colors out of poster board to hang on the wall.
The Games:
-Obstacle Course. The obstacle course should be set up as the first
game. The parts will depend on the layout of your yard and what
materials you have on hand. To make it more difficult, require the
guests to complete the entire course on their knees, or with their
legs tied together.
-Balancing Act. You'll need formula cans or coffee cans, two for
each child. Set them up about shoulder width apart on a firm surface
like the driveway. Have each child stand with both feet on the cans.
They have one minute to get their balance. Then have them lift one
foot, balancing on just one can. The last one standing is the
winner.
-Giant Puzzle. Before the party, buy two large sheets of styrofoam
(at least 4" square). Lay each sheet on the driveway and use masking
tape to mark the outline on the concrete. Now cut each sheet into
geometric shapes. There should be 5-7 shapes per square. Use colored
dot stickers to mark each piece, one sheet red, the other blue.
Scatter the pieces on the lawn or in another room. When the teams
are ready, have two or three children chosen per team to assemble
the puzzle. The others have to race one by one to find and bring
back a piece with their team color on it. The first team to assemble
the pieces correctly wins.
-Confusion. Have all the children stand in a circle with their hands
toward the center and close their eyes. Now take precut yarn (2
meters long, 1 piece for every 2 children) and tie one end around
one child's wrist with a double knot and then to another one so that
in the end all the children are tied to a partner. No one should
have more than one string. To make this confusing, as you tie, weave
the yarn around the guests, under and over the other pieces of yarn,
etc. At the end, there will be a great mess. Without untying the
yarn, they must unravel themselves until each pair is free from the
group. The first pair to untangle is the winner.
-Go Fish. Fill a tub with water and add sealed, wrapped candy. Give
each child a paperclip hook on a pipecleaner. Each child has five
minutes to "fish" as many candies as possible without putting their
hands in the water. At the end, the child with the most candy wins.
The Prizes: Use paper bags as the goody bags. Fill with treats like
gummy worms and fish, fruit-shaped candy and yogurt covered raisins.
HINTS: To make this even more reality show-like, try video taping
everything. Hire someone or get a friend to capture the moments on
tape. After the party, you can send a copy of the video to each
guest.
