How to Throw a Pizza Party

What kid doesn't like pizza? And the only thing better than heading to the pizzeria is making your own right at home, with friends! Having a pizza themed birthday party is a great way to combine fun and food.

Preparation:

To get started you'll need one pre-made pizza crust for each child. Keep them small, about 6" in diameter is good. Have the crusts on plates in the fridge so you can pull them out when all the guests have arrived.

You will also need to prepare the ingredients for the pizzas. Having a ton of grated mozzarella cheese on hand is vital. If you don't want to grate that much, buy the pre-shredded kind at the supermarket.

Tomato sauce is another important ingredient. You can go two ways here, buy a couple of cans of spaghetti sauce, or just tomato paste. This depends on how healthy you want the kids to be and whether anyone has allergies in the group.

With the main ingredients taken care of, you need to make sure you have plenty of toppings on hand. The most common ingredients will be pepperoni, ham (cut into small pieces), chicken, ground beef, pineapple, and tomato slices. Since kids tend to avoid veggies, you probably can plan for less use of ingredients like onions, garlic, basil, red peppers, olives, and any other vegetable.

The last few things to prepare are chef's hats, which are optional, and aprons, which are not. Use fabric paint to write each guest's name on his or her apron and add the name of your pizza place below. Your birthday child can help with this preparation.

Decoration:

Make a big poster board sign to hang in the front doorway that says "David's (substitute birthday child's name) Pizza Place". You could even hang pizzas (of cardboard) on string from the ceiling!

Invitations:

The invitations should look like a piece of pizza, with the main instructions written on the back.

The Party:

When the guests arrive, each one should be presented with an apron and hat. Let the kids mingle until all or most of them have arrived. Then take them into the kitchen where you have just set out all the mini pizzas and tell them that first they need to spread tomato paste on the dough, then sprinkle it with cheese.

When everyone has finished the base for their pizza, let them go crazy with the toppings. Then you can bake all the pizzas on cookie sheets in the oven according to the dough instructions while the kids play or watch a video.

It's a good idea to write down the order of the pizzas as they go onto the baking tray so there is no confusion afterwards!

When the pizzas come out of the oven, it's time to eat! A pizza ice cream cake is the perfect dessert for this pizza party theme!
