Pirate Party
Pirates are all the rage now, with the
second Pirates of the Caribbean out. Pirates have always drawn
children, with the lure of adventure and treasure. Draw them right
into your great party theme!
The Invitations: A weathered document
works best for this. Soak writing paper in strong coffee and lay out
in the sun to dry. Burn the edges with a candle flame and then write
the party details in pirate lingo. For example, "Ay, it's time to
celebrate Lawson's birthday, if ye dare!"
The Decorations: Pirate themes are fun and easy. Scatter gold
chocolate coins around and add a few parrots sitting on the
furniture. You can add a skeleton or two as well. When the guests
come through the door, give them a pirate prop, a bandanna to wear
on their head, an eye patch, a clip on earring, etc.
The Cake: The cake should be made in a loaf pan. Cut the top 2" off
and reserve. You are going to ice the whole thing to look like a
chest, with the top propped open. Fill it with gold coins, candy
jewelry, etc. Chocolate icing is great, with yellow straps.
The Games:
-Treasure Hunt: Hide a bag of candy for each child in one place. Now
write about 10 clues, each a riddle that leads to the next clue.
When they get to the end, they get the candy. This is a great way to
give away your goody bags!
-Race to the Treasure: Have the kids line up and place five gold
chocolate coins in front of each one, in a straight line, about 3
feet apart. The children have to run forward, grab the first coin
and bring it back to start, then repeat with each of the remaining
coins. Everyone wins in this race!
-Blind Man's Cave: Pair the guests up and blindfold one of the two.
The one who can see must guide his partner without touching her. Set
up an obstacle course with the following points. Skeleton Wall - a
bead curtain. Eat an Eyeball - peeled grapes. Deadly Drop - climb up
two or three steps and jump off. You can think up more as you go.
-Parrot Food: You'll need a bag of unshelled sunflower seeds for
this game. Give each child a bowl with 25 seeds in it and a matching
bowl 10 feet away. They have to pick up one seed using only the
mouth, crack it between their teeth and spit the actual sunflower
seed into the second bowl. The first child to peel and spit all 25
seeds wins.
The Prizes: Goody bags for a pirate party should be made out of
cloth. Make little sacks to hold the treasures they receive. Candy
coins, candy jewelry and beads are good choices here.
