Music Fest
This is the ideal birthday theme for
older kids, preteens and up. You'll need to do a bit of research to
find out which music is most popular for this age group. Talk to
your preteen or teen about the music they like, borrow some cds,
etc.
This age group is particularly
difficult, so set up the games, but let them have plenty of time to
just hang out and listen to music, without you popping in every five
seconds! Keep adult intervention to a minimum and the party should
be a big hit!
The Invitations: Have your birthday child record an invitation on
the computer and burn them to cds. Make your own cd covers with his
or her photo and the pertinent details.
The Decorations: Old cds can be hung from the ceiling for a "cool"
look. Have favorite music playing in the background and hang posters
of the hottest groups and singers around the main party room.
The Cake: Ice a round cake to look like a cd, or bake a small round
cake and use a regular sheet cake to cut out the shape of a music
note. Ice with chocolate.
The Games:
-Guess the Song: Prepare a cd with only the first 3 seconds of
popular songs. There should be at least 50. The kids guess each song
as it's played. Have them shout it out, or they can write their
guess down and tally the correct answers at the end. The one who
guesses the most correctly wins.
-Make a Music Video: Use a camcorder to make a video. Put on a
favorite song and have the kids work out choreography and lip sync
to the lyrics. Record all this and while they are eating, you can
burn the video to DVD. Each guest takes a copy of the music video
home.
-Karaoke: Most DVD players can handle the karaoke function, just add
a mike and put in a karaoke DVD. If not, then have the guests sing
along with DVD, without a mike!
The Prizes: Goody bags are out with this age group, so a copy of the
music video DVD and a good time is generally enough.
