Fashion Party

This party theme is for girls. Preteen girls love clothes and this birthday party is for those chicas!

Before the Party:

You'll need to stock up at the thrift store. Buy elegant dresses that will fit your guests and accessories. You should have two or three items for each girl, plus some fancy costume jewelry, belts and hair accessories.

Set up a runway for the show. In your living room or back yard, lay out a strip of carpet or canvas and line it with rocks to hold the edges down. Set up lamps to illuminate the runway.

Set up a makeup station and a hair station where the girls can fix their hair and do their own makeup. These should be in a separate room.

The Invitations:

Make your own invitations from card paper and bits of silk and other fancy cloths. Edge the card with fabric and write the details in the middle.

The Party:

When your guests arrive, send them to the living room where you have the taped runway show playing on the TV. Once all the girls have arrived, you can send them to choose a dress and accessories and do their hair and makeup. Each girl can choose two dresses.

Meanwhile, put on music and get the video camera ready. If you have someone helping, you can take a photo as well, when each girl reaches the end of the runway and poses. Polaroids or digital photos are best.

Have the girls walk down the runway, one by one, pose at the end and turn around, walk back. You can have them do this once in each of their two dresses if you like. Tape the whole thing. They might beg for a retake and it's fine to do a second show if they are in agreement.

Later, have cake and ice cream while you watch the runway show on the TV. If you have the ability, burn a DVD of the show for each girl to take home. Give them a copy of their photos as well.

The idea of this party is to have fun, so make sure that if there are any plus-size girls that you have lots of dress options for them as well. No one should feel ugly or ungainly.

A fashion party can be great fun for kids. Have everything set up ahead of time and let the girls take their time with hair and makeup and you'll all enjoy the party.
