Ball Party Theme

All children love balls and they make a great party theme! You'll need to stock up on lots and lots of fun balls for this party!

The Invitations: Write the party details on a deflated beach ball and send it to each invited guest. Instruct them to bring their beach balls.

The Cake: Bake a three layer round cake and ice it to look like a soccer ball, using chocolate icing for the black patches.

The Decorations: You'll need plenty of balls for this. Buy cheap dollar store plastic balls that come 10 to a bag. Tape thread to them and hang them at varying heights from the ceiling in the main party room. Add a couple of beach balls as well. If you have any exercise balls or can borrow some, these make great floor decorations.

The Games:

-Memory Ball: Use a soccer-ball size plastic ball for this game. Have all the children stand in a circle and choose a theme like animals, sports, colors, etc. Now, the first child says a word that is in the category you chose, and throws the ball to one of the others in the circle. That child has 3 seconds to say another word from the category and throw the ball to another child. If anyone repeats a word that was already used, or takes longer than 3 seconds to think of a word, that child is out. Continue playing until one person wins. You can repeat the game with other themes until the kids get bored.

- Piñata: You need a ball shaped piñata for this game. It could be in the shape of a soccer ball, baseball, etc. Fill it with candy or small toys before the party and decorate half a broomstick with ribbons and paint. The piñata should be hung from a rope that goes over a bar or rafter or through a ring so an adult can hold the other end of the rope and move the piñata up or down. The children should stand in a line, keep them far from the piñata which will be swinging wildly. The first guest is blindfolded, spun three times and aimed at the piñata. He has 3 swings, then it is the next child's turn. It's important that the person controlling the piñata move it frequently so that it doesn't break too soon.

-The Ball Pit: This is more of an activity than a game. Buy a large bag of plastic balls and fill a child's wading pool with them. The children can have fun "swimming" in the balls. If you have more than 5 guests, it's a good idea to fill another wading pool.

-California Kickball. Set up a small version of a baseball diamond, using colored paper plates or Frisbees for the bases. The rules are the same as for baseball but the pitcher rolls the ball toward the batter who kicks it instead of hitting it. Use a soccer ball or one of a similar size.

-Ball Bounce Race: For this you'll need at least two bouncing balls, with the handle on top. Line the contestants up at the starting line and have them bounce their way to the finish line. No walking allowed. IF you only have two balls, turn it into a relay race.

The Prizes: Make goody bags out of ball themed wrapping paper and fill them with gumballs, a small bag of marbles, a jawbreaker, and round mints.
